Why are modern phones always so boring?…typically either black or silver…and they look just about as exciting as a tv remote control. In comparison, these vintage telephones from the 1960s at Russell Johnson Imports are so colorful, bright and cheerful. Yes…all modern conveniences are non-existent with these vintage phones, but they sure do make up for it in overall design and cuteness. I love all these colors, but my favorite is the red one and the baby blue one. (Photos from Russell Johnson Imports)

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009piles of tiles by xenia taler
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009Looky what I found…Xenia Taler and her amazing tiles! I would definitely buy these tiles to hang as artwork because each one is like a whimsical little painting. I can also imagine installing these little pieces of art as a surface treatment for a very special tabletop. And of course they can always be grouted and installed on any interior surface just like any other typical tile application (although I think they are a bit too precious for that). Here are some of my favorites…but definitely go to Xenia Taler’s website for more tile goodies. (Photos from Xenia Taler)
vintage royal typewriter
Tuesday, January 20th, 2009I stumbled across these vintage Royal typewriters from Three Potato Four and I think they are so cool…but I can’t think of a good reason to buy one. I love the quirky colors and I can try and convince myself to write a novel or something…but let’s be real…that would just be wishful thinking.
I’m sure somebody out there has an excellent reason to own one of these fantastic vintage typewriters, which have been completely refurbished to be fully functional and are available in a variety of groovy retro colors. Check out Three Potato Four for availability and pricing. (Photos are from Three Potato Four)
rugs by angela adams
Monday, January 19th, 2009I’ve always admired these rugs designed by Angela Adams. When I’m designing an interior space, I often think of it as a process of layering and these rugs add just the right amount of colors, textures and patterns. My living room and family room sofas would be very happy to rest their tired feet on these beautiful rugs. Hopefully someday they’ll make their way into our home, and I will welcome them with open arms… (Photos from Angela Adams website)
modDotz
Friday, December 5th, 2008I found these penny round tiles that come in a variety of yummy colors…just like candy…at Modwalls. They call them ModDotz and we’re using the “Chocolate Mousse” color in our downstairs powder room. I love these dots so much that I’m trying to think of anywhere else I can possibly use them. The applications are endless…shower, pool surround, fireplace, backsplash, porch/patio, floor, wall/wainscot, counter…I’m even thinking of ways to incorporate them in my jewelry designs! They’ve also got plenty of other groovy tiles in cork, glass, metal and custom ceramic – check them out at www.modwalls.com. (All photos are used with permission from the Modwalls website)
kitchen cabinet inspiration
Thursday, December 4th, 2008So our kitchen cabinets are being installed this week…and I must admit that I was a little bit worried at first, but fortunately AK and I are both very pleased with it so far. The custom finish is a baby boy blue color with a fine chocolate-y stain and the counter tops are an orange recycled quartz slab (CaesarStone’s Tequila Sunrise). I’ll post final photos of the complete kitchen when everything is done, but for now I wanted to share the inspiration for our cabinets – the super-grand custom bookcase located at the Raoul Textile Library in LA (which surprise surprise happens to be the place where I go to work everyday).
That little vintage desk lamp and laptop computer on the far left is where I sit (above). And here’s a more detailed shot of the bookcase from a different angle (below).
house jewelry
Monday, December 1st, 2008So we’re finally at the stage of selecting and installing all the lighting for the house, and I must admit that I’m all giddy about it…similar to the rush I feel when I find a radiant ring to adorn my chubby-stubby fingers. There’s just something about the sparkly refraction of light bouncing around a room that gives me the same bliss/satisfaction as having something sparkly and pretty dancing on my fingers. Since I’m not posting any photos of our interiors until everything is all done, I’ve decided to just share a few amazing lighting options that I’ve found throughout my online travels. I’m particularly drawn to vintage lighting, but due to their hefty price tags, I’ve managed to find some comparable modern reproductions as well.

chair or art?
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008If I were a queen, this would be my throne. This incredible Brazilian piece is called the “Quotation Marks” Lounge Chair, designed and made by Sergio Rodrigues in 1962. It currently lives at NOHO Modern in Los Angeles and is available for sale at a price that far exceeds my very-unqueen-like annual salary. According to NOHO, “This is the only chair in existence. It was made for the 1962 exhibition ‘Furniture as Objects of Art’ and was never put into production due to the great expense. It is made from solid jacaranda and leather; even the armrests have sculpted solid jacaranda that are wrapped in leather.” Nothing else compares and I am in complete speechless awe. It looks alive…as if it’s some mystical creature ready to get up and walk away at any moment. There’s a small part of me that feels slightly afraid, but mostly I just want to be embraced and protected by this magnificent beast of a chair. A big THANK YOU to NOHO Modern for allowing me to share this in my silly little blog. All photos are from NOHO Modern, and please check out the rest of their drool-worthy inventory for more amazing things!
stressed
Monday, August 25th, 2008I think I’m feeling a lot of stress lately because I haven’t been able to sleep well and my skin is breaking out in hives and eczema. And just when I’m starting to feel a bit relaxed, my worrying AK dutifully informs me “your eczema is really bad”…which is just what a girl wants to hear, causing my anxiety to spike and making me itch even more. It’s a neverending cycle and I think it mostly has to do with the house being in such disarray. Clutter in the space equals clutter in the mind. And there is so much crap in our house and so little space to move anything…there’s really not much I can do to improve the situation…not until the remodeling is done downstairs anyway. The only thing I can do now is to just try and relax and not let all the clutter eat away at me. I just feel so defeated and tired all the time. This is not a current photo, but it shows the state of our kitchen and family room a few short weeks ago. How much worse can it possibly get?
